The essentials of playing Peg Solitaire

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Peg Solitaire. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Practice with a purpose

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

What the game asks you to do

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

A walkthrough of the rules

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

How to use the controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Read a button’s label before selecting it. A new-round button replaces the current round.

One way to understand the rules

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Notice the change in the playing area.

A useful caution

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
