An introduction to playing Golf Solitaire

Start Golf Solitaire by looking at the playing area and its controls. Remove all 35 tableau cards. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Seven columns of five, one stock pass. Free solo play, no wagering.

One thing to notice as you play

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Understand the aim

Remove all 35 tableau cards. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

How to proceed

  1. Take an exposed bottom card one rank above or below the waste top, allowing ace–king wrapping.
  2. Click an exposed card or eligible pair to remove it.
  3. Draw when useful.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Read a button’s label before selecting it. A new-round button replaces the current round.

Work through an example

Waste queen accepts jack or king. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Choose a deliberate next step.

Notice this detail

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
